about
“Fortune Smiles” is an experimental pop single that explores the intertwined and opposing forces of will and luck– confronting the question of whether they might both be leading you to the same place. Processed harp, shifting vocals, and orchestral textures interlock to construct a contrapuntal tornado evocative of Kate Bush, tUnE-yArDs, and Terry Riley.
The physical release of "Fortune Smiles" is on a Fruit-Loop-flavored blue fortune cookie packaged in a gem-shaped origami box (handmade by yours truly). Cracking it open reveals a URL where you can discover the audio.
lyrics
i was born on a hill,
or maybe a bus,
wherever glitter lands, luck
spotlight hot,
tell us what you want
paint the picture,
describe the inkblot
brightness aggressive
and cruel in its clarity
hallways fluorescent,
the distant the beckoning
i’m swinging
door, door, door, door,
door after door
fortune smiles
we lean her way to feel this
flash, to smile back
she leans our way to feel this
we live in a deal,
or maybe a ride
every coin lands on a side
binary blades of light
switch black, switch white
rooms made of edges,
no details, no in-between
walls and decisions,
the risk and the charity
i’m swinging
door, door, door, door,
door after door
fortune smiles
we lean her way to feel this
flash, to smile back
she leans our way to feel this
i’m waiting here for the after
staying for the glow... oh...
it was a joke
trapdoor, tornado
it was a game show
lifeline, split, wishbone
we really like you
but we’re gonna say no...
fortune smiles
we lean her way to feel this
flash, to smile back
she leans our way to feel this
